Need to excavate?

It is important for every homeowner that you are aware of the rules for hand digging or excavations on your property.

Did you know that if your are digging deeper than 30 meters, you are required to have a line locate to avoid any utilities that may be buried beneath. Some utilities are buried just centimeters below ground. Yes, even if you want to plant a tree!


Step 1:

  • Submit your locate request online or by phone and request that ALL buried utilities on your property be located and marked. We have provided you a link and a number to call on our Useful links page.

  • Plan ahead giving at least three full working days.


Step 2:

  • You will need to wait until locate to be completed before starting your project.

  • Generally you will be provided a drawing indicating the utility lines on your property.

  • The utilities are marked using spray paint and/or flags or both to mark where they are located.


Step 3:

  • Customer-owned lines, such as sprinkler systems, are not registered with Utility Safety Partners.

  • The utility owners do not know the location of these lines, so it is the homeowners responsibility to identify them. If you do not know then you may contact a private locator, we have provided a link to many options on our Useful Links page


Step 4:

  • Locate markings identify the approximate location of buried utilities and do not identify the depth of the line

  • Dig with care

  • If you have questions about digging close to a utility, contact the utility owner.
